Another weekend has gone by and still Google is teasing us by not releasing its latest Page Rank update. Many people agree it is long over due – it was expected by some at the end of June and by most by the start of July 2010.

Page Rank is one of those strange things on the internet full of contradictions. It doesn’t really mean anything, but nearly everyone wants a good Page Rank. Google tell us that we should not ‘abuse’ Page Rank by selling and buying links based on it, so why do they make it open to all of us?

Well, in short, by making the data available through the Google Toolbar, we are more likely to install the Toolbar to get at this information. Then, because we install it and tick the box to allow it to feedback the information to Google as to what page we are looking at so that we see the Page Rank information, Google can then track our internet browsing activity.

It seems that I am getting carried away with Big Brother type conspiracies, but actually, it is far from it.

I’ve been looking recently at various information and it does seem that Google is doing its absolute best to get at as much traffic data as it can, from Alexa, Analytics, Feedburner and the Google Toolbar Page Rank widget.

Why? Well it is actually very simple. By knowing which sites get the most visitors and which sites are most sticky, Google can then send visitors to the sites that people are finding most useful.

Quite clever really, but it depends on a continuing interest in Page Rank and that is done by updating it and giving us something more to talk about. There have been little ‘adjustments’ this week, so maybe we shouldn’t expect a major July 2010 Page Rank update. Maybe we should instead expect the next major update to be an August 2010 update?
