I’ve been reading (and studying!) a recent yougov survey (you can see the full report here. It looks at various smartphone users and tells us a lot about who uses them, what for and their habits.

So, what does the report tell us?

Young males
Well 37% of the males and and 29% of the females questioned (33% overall) owned a smartphone. With over 50% of 18 – 34 year old having one and 44% of 35-44 year olds, this is the main user group (it drops to 25% for 45-54 year olds and 16% above that age). So, if you have a smartphone you are probably under 44 and male.

What phone?
Now we get interesting. 26% of the users have the iPhone, which is supposed to be the market leader. However, 28% are using Google Android phones and 15% don’t know what they have, with 14% having Blackberries!

However, sex matters! 31% of males owns an Android with only 24% on iPhone, but 29% of females own iPhone and only 23% Android. And 18% of females (compared to 13% males) don’t know what they have. And geographically, iPhones beat Androids in London and Wales, but not elsewhere!

What three areas do you most use it for?
Well 45% of males questioned used social networking apps and this jumped up to 53% for females. Next overall highest usage was news apps – with 39% of males and 27% of females. Gaming apps are the next most popular, in use by 30% of users and is one of the few areas that males (32%) out use females (29%).

Maps and travel comes a close 4th on 28% and again the males (32%) are far heavier users than females (22%). However, 20% of females and 14% of males (total 17%) don’t use any apps at all.

Which and what for?
Does the operating system indicate typical usage? Well overall all categories see more usage in the iPhone category, except for mapping/travel and news. It looks like iPhones are more commonly used for entertainment, whereas Android is used for information.

If you are an iPhone users…
You are probably a female under 45 earning between £20k & £30k using it for entertainment, whereas if you are an Android owner, you are probably the same age, but male and earning £10k less, but using it for more business type apps. However, you are far less likely to be in debt to your bank!
Smartphones and your finances…
So who uses what?

The survey also asked how often respondents went overdrawn and their annual salary. Over half (54%) of all Android respondents never went overdrawn whereas 39% of iPhone users never went overdrawn, the lowest count for this question. So if you are overdrawn, you are more likely to have an iPhone!

However, 31% of Android users earned between £10k and £20k per year against 13% of iPhone users, whereas 27% of iPhone users against 14% of Android users earn between £20k and £30k per year. It looks like iPhone users earn slightly more.
