My marketing tip of the month for this month is very simple. Use Twitter!

Have you heard of Twitter? Do you think that it is just for chatting with other people? Think it is a tool just for socialising and wasting time? Think again!

Yes, Twitter probably costs many companies a lot of wasted time as office workers follow people and add their own tweets of what they are doing that day. So now is your chance to jump in and have those people following you and reading about you.

It is quite simple. If potential customers are out there, possibly using Twitter and following other people, then as well they could be following you.

For those that do not know what happens on Twitter, people post comments about what they are thinking or doing. These short comments are known as Tweets. As a member of Twitter you can also follow other people. By following people, when you sign into Twitter you see a list of their most recent Tweets and read what they are up to. If a Tweet that you read is very interesting, you can then re-Tweet it so that your followers also get to read it.

And it is not just people who know about you that will read your Tweets. If your Tweets contain keywords that someone is searching on, then that person might also find your Tweet and be able to read it.

It is quite a simple system. Write what you are doing and read what others are doing. Each Tweet is limited to 140 characters and can contain a full website URL within that, which Twitter will convert to a link if it is a valid website page.

So that is the basic idea. And it is easy to extend that to a business situation just as well as it fits people and personalities. It is well known that many big businesses have teams of people that Tweet for them. Offering voucher codes and latest discount information is a good way of getting read and re-Tweeted, thus spreading the information.

This means that for most websites and businesses, there is a good opportunity for some marketing through Twitter. All that you need to do is to set up a Twitter account and start Tweeting. Write about what is happening in your business. Write about latest offers, special deals, new contracts etc.

Include on your website a link to your Twitter account with a suitable follow me badge and write general information that other people will find and might then start to follow you on.

Ultimately, your aim is to get your existing customers following you so that you can remind them of your services and to tell other potential customers that you exist. It is a free system, so get using it!
